About the Course
This course is about you. And the cross-generational inheritance solutions that you need. The focus is not on learning the sharia principles of Islamic Inheritance Law. Rather, the course aims to cover the most common, practically needed inheritance-related decisions you are likely to face in today’s world—from the sharia perspective.
How can you write your Islamic will properly? What do you need to do to ensure your will shall be effected under the jurisdiction of secular law? If you are a convert whose family is non-Muslim, what should you do regarding your assets? What about custody of your children?
The course shall use a number of assignments and case studies based on practical scenarios.
Week 1: Introduction; Rulings of Inheritance
- Quranic Verses
- Rights on your Estate
- Funeral expenses
- Debts owed
Week 2: Rulings of Inheritance; Who are your heirs?
Week 3: Your Will
- How to write your will
The course will consist of 3 Live Classes taught by Dr. Ashraf Muneeb over 3 weeks. The course uses assignments drawn from real-life scenarios to allow students to review the material. Sheikh Ashraf holds office hours where students can discuss the sharia permissibility of transactions with him one-on one.
No background is required: everyone is welcome!
Why is this absolutely essential knowledge for Muslims today?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Learn inheritance and teach it for it is half the knowledge and it will be forgotten, and it is the first thing to be ripped from my umma” (Ibn Majah 2710). He also said: “Learn inheritance and teach it to people for I am a mortal being and knowledge will decrease until two people would differ amongst themselves over inheritance, but wouldn’t find an arbitrator.” (al-Nasa’i 6305).
Look around and you will see the truth of the Prophet’s statement—families divided over property, children hurt over parental preference in wills, siblings no longer on speaking terms with each other—especially when the deceased has a large estate. It is crucial that inheritance law be learned and applied, otherwise some may be denied their rights while others eat of haram wealth.
Will-Writing and Inheritance will provide you with a crash-course practical introduction for ensuring that your multi-generation planning in today’s world complies with the sharia.
How is this course different from LAW150: Introduction to Inheritance Law?
The focus of Introduction to Inheritance Law, and all the subsequent courses in Dr. Ashraf’s Inheritance Series, is on learning underlying sharia principles and then practically applying them to one’s financial dealings. Will-Writing and Inheritance has a different focus – quite simply, your assets. This is not a fiqh course with a focus on learning the principles of Islamic Inheritance. Rather, it is a minimum time-commitment, practical course designed to cover the sharia perspective on the most common decisions Muslim in today’s world face with their inheritance issues.
