About the Course
In this course, you will unpack the 42 hadiths from Imam Nawawi’s collection Forty Hadith of Imam Nawawi – one of the most cherished shorter collections of rigorously authenticated hadiths. These hadith are unique among the corpus of ahadith because they are of the Messenger of Allah’s most comprehensive utterances, encapsulating the fundamentals of Islam, with clear guidelines for sustained and powerful personal and societal change. The course will focus on the language of the hadiths, their implications in Sacred Law, and their relevance to our lives as Muslims in the 21st century. The lessons focus on the central theme of each hadith whose essential meaning shall be expounded. Throughout this journey, you will also learn concepts related to the study of the science of hadith, and aspects of the lives of the narrating Companions.
Over the duration of 10 weeks, the course shall cover the text in its entirety with commentary on each hadith. Each hadith encompasses a central theme, which is expounded in practical terms. The themes covered are extremely diverse, ranging from The Divine Decree to Shame and Modesty, but are repeatedly brought back to their practical purport – how their wisdom can be applied to one’s life to change through the process of ‘ilm, ‘amal, and hal (knowledge; works based on that knowledge; and the resultant spiritual state one gains).
The course will consist of weekly Live Sessions covering the text of Forty Hadith of Imam Nawawi with commentary from Sheikh Ashraf Muneeb – the traditional way of teaching, where a scholar expounds on a text and explains how it fits within the broader corpus of the religion. Sheikh Ashraf shall hold weekly office hours where students can consult with him one-on-one. There is an end of term Final Exam which focuses on analysis of the hadith meanings, their essential lessons, as well as questions relating to the hadith sciences that students were taught over the course of the semester.
Weekly Time Commitment
The course requires an estimated hour to an hour-and-a-half per week outside the live session to review the material and take notes.
The Forty Hadith of Imam Nawawi is the only required text, which shall be provided in both Arabic an English. No additional material is required.
No background is required: all are welcome!
Why Forty Hadith? Did you know…
The Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and give him peace, said “Whosoever memorizes and preserves for my people forty hadith relating to their religion, Allah will resurrect him on the Day of Judgment in the company of jurists and religious scholars.” A prolific scholar by the name of Imam Nawawi took this hadith to heart, and it drove him to put together what has become one of the most cherished shorter collections of rigorously authenticated hadiths
