About the Course
Learn from the best generation that ever was.
The Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best of people are those living in my time. Then come those who follow them, and then come those who follow them…” (Bukhari: 2,652).
In this course, Sheikh Ashraf shall present episodes from the lives of the Sahaba that illustrate the high virtues they displayed in difficult circumstances. Through his commentary, Sheikh Ashraf shall focus on the central importance to each of us of personally embodying these virtues and how we can do so in the modern world: the practical lessons to be drawn from such exemplars and steps we can take in our lives today.
Correctly interpreting and applying practical decisions from inspirational vignettes is not always an easy task – How do we embody the principle espoused in today’s world? Do we have the right context? What is too much? What is not enough? How can we find the right balance? A guide is needed who understands the place of these virtues in the broader religion, and their correct application.
Join Sheikh Ashraf as he helps you navigate your way through the stars according to the hadith of our Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace: “My companions are like the stars; whoever among them you use for guidance, you will be rightly guided.”

How can this course benefit my life today?
Do you think your life is hard? Do you have problems that you can’t solve? Do you have habits that you can’t break? The Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them) faced similar challenges, which they overcame and embodied ihsan, or spiritual excellence, to become the best generation the earth would witness. By examining their stories, you will learn, be captivated, and most importantly be positioned to increase ihsan in your life.
From a bigger perspective, becoming familiar with their narrative, the decisions they made, and the reasons behind them, serves the crucial purpose of connecting our hearts to the reality the hearts of our pious predecessors were connected to - the greater cycle of existence: our Maker; our life in this world; and our eternal life to come beyond the grave.
This is not a course with homework or exams. Rather the real work of this course lies in practical change and application in our own lives – the real exam we are living everyday. As Sheikh Ashraf says, “ These stories are not just to entertain us, rather their purpose is to teach us a lesson. We must learn the lesson and then put it into practice by applying it into our lives.”
Why should you study the lives of the Sahaba with a teacher, a guide?
The benefit of wisdom lies in choosing the right direction through life’s uncertainties. We not only need waymarks to light our path, but we also need a guide to be able to use the waymarks correctly.
In Sheikh Ashraf’s words, “Stars give light, but not direction. You must be able to use the stars as a means to be rightly guided. So even with the starts, we need a guide to show us the right direction. We look to the stars, but they are not sufficient. Our direction is the sharia, we must follow the sharia.” And this can only be done by following a scholar who has come to embody the principles commanded by the noble sharia in every aspect of his life.
“Following the story of the Sahaba without applying the sharia in our life doesn’t mean anything. The main purpose of the course is to get people to walk, not just talk, by applying the sharia.”
