About the Course
The Life Of The Greatest Prophet is a course that aims to bring the Seera to life, by focusing on our hearts. The content of Part 10 covers the last days of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Being based on some of the greatest and most extensive reference books in Seera literature (references provided in Suggested Readings below), the course offers unparalleled access to details and stories rarely narrated in other English Seera courses.
You shall hear accounts that you have not heard before, you shall study commentary of the ‘ulema (traditional scholars) that very few teachers ever discuss.
Through focusing on the transcendence and greatness of the events surrounding the Best of Creation, and taking lessons from his life and death, this course aims to pull at the heart-strings of those who aspire to increase in their love for the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace.
This course will cover the death of the Prophet, in 10 lessons, meeting once a week for a live class.
The very last days of the life of the Prophet abound in teachings and events that every single Muslim should be acquainted with. These were among the most important days of his life. They included his last words, his last actions, the signs he gave for the Caliph to be appointed after him. They emphasize his care for the umma, his care for women, his care for salat, the farewell Hajj.
They emphasize the essence of his life: seeking Allah. At the end of his life, he chose Allah over his own family. This in itself is a great lesson for every Muslim, that one should choose Allah and be prepared to meet Him, such that when death comes, we look forward to our return.
This course is not intended to break our hearts by emphasizing the tragic loss in the death of the Prophet. Rather it is a course that is intended to soften our hearts by detaching it from the dunya, and seeing how the Prophet chose the akhira over the dunya at every moment of his life, and especially closer to his death.
This is a course that talks about death. Death is not something we should dislike and it should encourage us to be active and prepare for it.
Seera literature in English is scant compared to the wealth of information available in Arabic. Sources the student can look at are: Muhammad by Martin Lings (along-with GF Haddad’s Critical Reading of the book, available online), The Sealed Nectar by Safi-ur Rahman al-Mubakpuri, and Revelation: The Story of Muhammad by Meraj Mohiuddin, which is a reference book.
Non-seera literature on the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, that are highly recommended reads also include Our Master Muhammad The Messenger of Allah translated by Khalid Williams and Muhammad, Messenger of Allah – Ash-Shifa of Qadi ‘Iyad translated by Aisha Bewley.
The Arabic reference works Ustadh Hatim uses in this course are: Subul Al-Huda war-Rashaad (also known as The Shami Seera), a 12-volume work by Imam Muhammed ibn Yusuf as Salihi ash Shami – one of the most extensive reference books in Seera literature; As Seera Nabawiyya Dahlaniyya by Ahmad ibn Zaini Dahlan, the mufti of Mecca at his time; and Seera Nabawiyya by Ali Muhammed As-Sallabi.
This course is for everyone—the young and the old, the new and the life-long Muslim.
Do I need to study Seera? What if I have already taken some Seera courses?
Studying the Seera doesn’t end with finishing one or two courses. It is a life-time study, not only because there are thousands of resources on it, but also because of the heart’s need to remain attached to and in touch with the life of the Prophet and the early Muslims. Continuous study of the Seera helps us deepen our understanding of the Din and provides us with a torch that illuminates our way in the darkness of the materialistic world that surrounds us. We need to keep the torch burning. Our survival depends on it.
How is this course different from other Seera courses?
Seera courses are as different as their teachers, their resources and their approach. Ustadh Hatim teaches the course from lengthy books of the Seera that are usually neglected, and thus remain inaccessible to English speakers who are really eager for exposure to the details, and to learn new lessons and stories. Ustadh Hatim’s style is one that combines between knowledge and love. He doesn’t want his students to merely know what happened, he tries to make them travel in the past, imagine things as they happened and feel the hearts of the early Muslims as they pounded with love, joy, sadness or fear.
How practical is this course?
This course is both educational and motivational. It shows one how the Prophet – Allah bless him and give him peace – solved problems, how he was dedicated to the service of his Lord and his fellow men, how he dealt with the ups and downs of life, and how the companions emulated his example. As we learn how they transformed themeselves, we are motivated to be like them, and we find ourselves following them in our own lives with love and ease.
Will studying the Seera increase my love for the Prophet – Allah bless him and give him peace?
Without a doubt. Any group of people who sit together to talk about Allah and his Messenger – Allah bless him and give him peace- will see their love grow and their sprits rise. This course takes this very goal as its main endeavor. While love is in the hands of Allah, this course seeks to open the minds and hearts of everyone who aspires to be with the Prophet - Allah bless him and give him peace - in this world and the next.
