About the Course
In this course students shall read the entirety of Imam Ghazali’s short work Ayyuha al-Walad: Letter to a Disciple. The letter covers the most essential knowledge of spiritual wayfaring: what constitutes sufficient beneficial knowledge for our spiritual lives, and how to act on it to traverse through this life safely and arrive at salvation in the next.
Students shall listen to recorded lessons of Sheikh Nuh Keller reading and explaining the book, adding his own commentary.
Live classes shall be with Ustadh Hatim Yousef, who shall focus on acting as a life coach to help students practicalize the lessons—motivating and inspiring us to implement actionable measures in our own lives, to revive our own hearts and deepen our own connection with the religion. Ustadh Hatim shall act as the course instructor and answer all student questions.
Course Syllabus & Format
The course will cover the entire letter Imam Ghazali wrote to his disciple over ten weeks.
Each week students shall listen to 3 recordings of Sheikh Nuh, each recording being approximately 20 minutes long. Live Classes with Ustadh Hatim shall meet for one hour each week.
Why did Sheikh Nuh choose to read Imam Ghazali’s Letter to a Disciple?
The focus of this book is advice. This book contains the most distilled advice necessary to build one’s spiritual life in a few pages, for those who do not have the himma to read Imam Ghazali’s longer works.
Imam Ghazali wrote the book for a student who studied with him and received the details of all the Islamic sciences, but then started seriously contemplating about his grave, and what knowledge he would take with him to the next life. The student was deeply struck by the hadith of the Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, in which he sought refuge from knowledge which does not benefit.
This is what Letter to a Disciple imparts — beneficial knowledge, acting upon which will lead to a spiritual light that shall survive one’s death and accompany one in the grave and on Resurrection Day.
