About the Course
In this course, you will unpack the 50 hadiths from Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali’s hadith collection, Jami’ al-Ulum wa al-Hikam fi Sharh Khamsina Hadithan, translated as The Compendium of Knowledge and Wisdom. These fifty sayings of the Messenger of Allah are the most comprehensive hadiths, upon which the entire matter of the religion revolves.
The lessons shall look at the central theme of each hadith, whose essential meaning shall be expounded. Dr. Ashraf’s commentary will focus on the language of the hadiths, their implications in Sacred Law, and their practical application to our lives today—how their wisdom can be lived so that one can change through the transformative process of ‘ilm, ‘amal, and hal (gaining knowledge; performing works based on that knowledge; and one’s resultant transformed spiritual state).
Throughout the course, you will also learn concepts related to the science of hadith, and aspects of the lives of the narrating Companions.
Over the duration of 10 weeks, the course shall cover the 50 hadiths with commentary on each hadith.
Each hadith focuses on themes that encompass all aspects of a Muslim’s life. The range of themes that shall be covered starts from the foundation of our Intention, to dealing with everyday Actions and necessities such as Food and Wealth, emotions such as Anger, Shame and Desire, concerning Mistakes, Forgetfulness and Forgiveness, and what it means practically to have Belief in Allah’s Decree and Reliance on Allah.
The course will consist of weekly Live Sessions covering the text with commentary from Dr. Ashraf Muneeb – the traditional way of teaching, where a scholar expounds on a text and explains how it is applied to one’s life and how it fits within the broader corpus of the religion.
Dr. Ashraf shall hold weekly office hours where students can consult with him one-on-one.
There is an end of term Final Exam which focuses on analysis of the hadith meanings, their essential lessons, as well as questions relating to the hadith sciences that students were taught over the course of the semester.
There is no required course text – all the hadiths shall be included in the course slides.
Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali’s, Jami’ al-Ulum wa al-Hikam fi Sharh Khamsina Hadithan min jawami al-Kalim, translated as The Compendium of Knowledge and Wisdom by Abdassamad Clarke (Turath Publishing) can be used as a reference text for the course.
