Known for his exceptional memory, Imam Tirmidhi traveled far and wide to study hadith under notable scholars including Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, and Imam Abu Dawud. His devotion to scholarship was so great that once even his teacher Imam Bukhari mentioned to him, "I have benefited from you more than you have benefited from me." Imam Tirmidhi compiled Sunan al-Tirmidhi, one of the six canonical hadith compilations, and eight other books. Of these other works, Shamail is the best known.
