Morphology is the study of the structure of words, enabling you identify root letters and patterns. The study of Sarf, or morphology, goes hand-in-hand with the study of grammar—without it, you can’t recognize the state and thus the meaning of many words.

In this study of a classical primer, you will gain a comprehensive map of Arabic morphology that you will refer to for the rest of your life. Al-Izzi Explained builds on the foundation you gained in Miftah and gives you a more detailed look at nouns and verbs. This will allow you to reach a higher level of understanding when reading classical texts—90 to 100 percent of the complete meaning as opposed to the 60 to 70 percent understanding you have at the end of Miftah.

This course fits into the 300-level courses that mark the beginning of the Sibawayh curriculum. By the time you reach this stage, you are thoroughly familiar with the most important rules of Arabic and are now ready for Arabic courses that are based completely around reading a classical text and using it to help you gain a deeper understanding of the Arabic language.

By the end of this course, you will have read a classical text in Sarf and understand it word for word. You will be able to identify root letters of verbs and nouns and be able to construct words using various patterns from given roots, allowing you to apply the rules of morphology to understanding texts. Specific examples will be taken from the Quran and Hadith. In addition, you will be given exposure to the language used in classical texts and terminology used in tafseer and grammar books.
