About the Course
“The main point of the Quran is to move hearts to Allah, Mighty and Exalted. By seeing and appreciating how exactly the Quran does this, we can let the Quran take its effect on our souls, and improve our lives, inwardly and outwardly.” – Ustadh Hatim’s succinct description of his course unwaveringly focuses on the soul’s upward ascent to its Creator. This is the single-minded goal of this Tafsir course. This is done by looking at the linguistic miracle of the Quran on different levels:
The words themselves: The course gives you a taste of the Divine selection of the words – their surpassing beauty, and the shades and nuances that lend multifold meanings to the verses. Each verse is an ocean of meaning – the course attempts to discover these jewels and shed light on the significance of every single word. There is a focus on understanding the language and increasing your Quranic vocabulary, helping you feel the Quran with your heart and understand it in its own language.
The ordering of the verses: The course shall look at how the sequence of the verses and their connection to one another has a profound relevance to the structure and message of the Suras.
The acoustic meanings of Tajwid: The course shall also look at the meanings conveyed by the acoustics of Tajwid – how the sounds of proper recital are not merely musical auditory vehicles, but conveyors of meaning as well, going hand-in-hand with and enhancing the meanings conveyed by the words and the verses they build.
The ordering of the Suras: The relation of one Sura to another may seem random to those unfamiliar with the wisdom behind it. Just as with verses, the placement and sequence of the building blocks of Suras similarly bears upon the structure of the Quran. Understanding the wisdom behind the sequence makes memorizing and appreciating the Quran easier.
Tying these individual components back to their practical purport: Conveying the momentousness of how Allah, Mighty and Exalted is addressing us directly in a language that we can understand, and how these verses address the soul and our lives directly is Ustadh Hatim’s desired goal for his students. “Every single word of this Book is for elevating the soul through employing it in practice.“
- Tafsir Sura Al-Qari’ah to Sura Al-Nas

How shall this course benefit me 5 times a day?
In our daily prayers, we commonly recite the shorter chapters from the end of the Quran. Largely Meccan Suras, they are extremely beautiful and characterized by short verses, powerful language, vivid imagery, and musical rhymes—often addressing the most basic themes of belief, Allah and His Oneness, the Last Day, and the Prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. These Suras also explore mankind’s natural tendency to greed and lack of realizing the great significance of time. Being intimately familiar with the meanings and context for these verses will help you both gain insights about your own life and draw closer to Allah and His revelation.
If understood and properly reflected upon, these verses shake the listener to the core. This is essential in increasing one’s khusho, or presence of heart, in prayer.
How much Arabic do I need to know to benefit from the course?
Although the more Arabic you know the deeper you will understand and enjoy the Quran, this course is designed for non-Arabic speakers regardless of their command of the language. Everyone shall benefit InshaAllah.
Why do we need a course to understand the Quran? Isn’t it simple and straightforward?
Anyone who reads the Quran will find it easy to understand. But what a difference between someone who can merely skim the surface and someone who can dive into the depths of the ocean and explore its endless worlds and wonders! The traditional scholars of Tafsir, who mastered all prerequisite sciences for understanding the Quran (Fiqh, Grammar, Rhetoric, Hadith, and so forth), spent their entire lives studying and teaching the Quran. They knew full well that Tafsir is a journey that begins on the surface but continues on with the soul’s journey through eternity. Such is the nature of the eternal Truths that are expounded in the Book. A telling example is the life of Imam Ibn Ashur – it took him fifty years to finish his Tafsir, and he died the day he completed it, may Allah raise his rank eternally!
What shall I know coming out of the course?
By the end of the course, you will gain an understanding of the meanings of the selected chapters, which will help you connect with and memorize the Quran. This course will also serve as an introduction to a linguistic study of the Quran. You will begin to appreciate and be moved by the beauty and depth of Quranic Arabic. You will memorize a vocabulary list of common Quranic vocabulary and common Quranic linguistic styles, making the course an excellent stepping-stone to further studies and readings in tafsir literature. You will also have gained an understanding of the approach and style of tafsir.
