The Detailed Fiqh of Menstruation & Related Topics  delves deeper into the basics introduced in the 6-week introductory course on the topic. The course will present an in-depth study of the precepts specific to menstruation, as well as review the general precepts applicable to menstruation.

The general and menstrual precepts covered in this course have been deduced and compiled by Ustadha Hedaya and Shaykh Ashraf Muneeb in their upcoming book. These precepts are not found in any other reference book this clearly defined and stated. You will have the benefit to study these precepts comprehensively directly with Ustadha Hedaya.

Other fiqh courses dedicate only one lesson to the basics of this personally obligatory subject, whereas this series of courses comprehensively examines common situations and potential issues. An added plus is that this course is taught by a female who truly understands the subject matter. By the end of the course, you will be able to apply the basic rulings in your daily life and appreciate the complexity of issues relating to menstruation.

The text used for this course is Ustadha Hedaya and Shaykh Ashraf Muneeb’s Birgivi’s Manual Interpreted: Complete Fiqh of Menstruation & Related Issues (Amana Publications, January 2007). This ground-breaking book in English is based on the Ottoman scholar Imam Birgivi’s Treatise Dhukhr al-Muta’ahhilin wa al-Nisa’ fi ta’rif al-Athar wa al-Dima’ along with Imam Ibn ‘Abidin’s commentary of it. According to Imam Ibn ‘Abidin, this treatise by Imam Birgivi is the principal reference for menstruation and lochia and their related rulings in the Hanafi school. Ustadha Hedaya has permission to teach Imam Birgivi’s treatise from Shaykh Muhammad Amin Siraj, a shaykh at the Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih mosque in Istanbul, who wrote that she demonstrated “full comprehension and meticulous understanding” of the text.

While directly affecting women, it is also important for men to study this topic as well. The material is obligatory for Muslim women to learn, as well as for fathers and guardians in order to raise their children with sound knowledge of the religion.
